Development of the Belgrade was constructed over 2 phases. Works included creation of new rear stage entrance and ancillary accommodation, a new 300 seat auditorium, enlarged entrance foyer, new rehearsal room and ancillary accommodation.  Special considerations taken into account due to its listed building status.

The post war theatre was to undergo its first major upgrade and improvement from when originally designed and constructed in 1958. The Theatre remains one of the largest regional producing theatres in Britain.

Since its original construction the design codes for theatres have developed including the higher fire safety standards expected thus introducing reduced flexibility on how the building could be used.

The improvement scheme was successful with the aim to upgrade the fire safety standards particularly to the front of house areas and allow additional uses and larger numbers of persons in the building.
